Definitions

Internationalization Methodologies

A comparison of COIL and EMI: what they are, duration, instructor profile and expected student interaction.

COIL - Collaborative Online International Learning
What is it?

COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) is a methodology of international collaborative online learning that connects subjects/modules from universities in different countries so that students and professors work jointly on interdisciplinary academic activities or equivalent topics that culminate in a product. This methodology integrates the international and intercultural dimension into the curriculum through digital technologies, allowing students to develop, over a period of 4 to 6 weeks, international experiences without the need for physical mobility.

Duration

4-6 weeks

Facilitator

Jointly with one or more national or international academic peers. Equivalent or interdisciplinary topics. Initiative supported by DRI and DIDDEC. Contact: dri@ucn.cl / diddec@ucn.cl

Student interaction

Common project culminating in a product. Joint intercultural teams. Project- or problem-based learning.

EMI - English as a Medium of Instruction
What is it?

Authentic integration of English in academic learning through linguistic scaffolding, activation of prior knowledge, visual and technological resources, and periodic activities that foster interaction, comprehension of scientific texts, academic writing, and participation in academic or professional contexts in English.

Duration
  1. 4 to 6 weeks within a subject or module
  2. Design/adapt a new subject/module with the methodology
  3. Subject/Module in English and Spanish (parallel sections)
  4. Design/adapt a new subject/module with the methodology + English teachers
Facilitator

Specialist in a specific area with language proficiency at B2+ Upper Intermediate level. Initiative supported by DRI and DIDDEC. Contact: dri@ucn.cl / diddec@ucn.cl

Student interaction

The development of professional or academic competencies is the main focus (content learning outcome), mediated through interaction in English.

Definitions

Internationalization Initiatives

Four complementary modalities to bring the international dimension into teaching and research.

Mirror Classes

What is it?

Academic resource using a shared digital platform between professors and students from two or more universities for synchronous and asynchronous sessions. Faculty coordinate to share bibliography and syllabi, defining common points for the mirror class.

Duration

1 or more sessions agreed with the partner

Facilitator

Jointly with one or more national or international academic peers. Equivalent or interdisciplinary topics.

Student interaction

Sharing academic experiences. Intercultural activities are optional.

Master Class / Working Group / Talk

Delivered by international faculty, in person or virtually.

What is it?

Academic activity featuring expert lectures to deepen knowledge on a specific topic. Usually a faculty member invites another to collaborate in the classroom, once.

Duration

1 or more sessions agreed with the partner

Facilitator

Person with expertise on a specific topic.

Student interaction

Participants ask questions. However, there is limited peer-to-peer interaction.

Short stays

What is it?

(Not managed via the international student programme)

Duration

Less than 90 days

Facilitator

N/A

Student interaction

Practical experience with professional and occasional peer interaction through different initiatives such as research internships, volunteering, labs, guided visits, conferences, seminars, and others.

Joint Doctoral Thesis Supervision (Cotutelle)

What is it?

Act of co-supervising a thesis with one or more people from an international institution.

Duration

Throughout the doctoral thesis period as established by the doctoral programme regulations.

Facilitator

UCN faculty + partner are co-directors of the thesis topic.

* An agreement is required for each cotutelle student.

Student interaction

The doctoral student is guided by co-directors from different institutions, who collaborate in defining the topic, objectives, research plan and progress monitoring of the thesis.

Academic Programme

DOUBLE DEGREE

A double degree is an academic program where a student follows a curriculum jointly designed by two higher education institutions, usually from different countries, and upon completion obtains two official university degrees, one granted by each participating institution.

In these programs:

  • 1
The student meets the academic requirements established by both universities.
  • 2
Part of the training takes place at the home institution and another part at the host institution.
  • 3
Upon completing the program, they receive two independently recognized diplomas, but based on an articulated curriculum between both institutions.
